The Second order of signification: Roland Barthes

Hello everyone, This is Bagla Radio. I’m Gulshan, your host and dost
you are listening  Study on Air.
I hope everything is going well and fine.
But not at my side, in the morning, today, when I said to my friend, ‘ Go and check my post. He went to Jammu post office. And call me where your posts are... LOL!!! I just want to tell him to check my ‘facebook post’.
See, how same word have different meanings.
Yeah, this is topic that we are going to discuss Today:
 The Second order of signification.
It is very interesting topic that tell us a Word or sign may have more than one meaning.
You know the word or sign is the combination of signifier and signified. I think You are asking, What these are?
Let me explain you with an example. Signifier is the actual word itself and signified is the mental image.
for example: word ‘apple’  signified us a fruit. So here, word apple is signifier and fruit is signified.
But there is also another meaning that signified through us word apple which mean a computer company. That is another meaning of same word.
That is Connotations.
We will talk on this but First Let us take an another example to understand it: as
The word ‘Red’ the literal meaning of this word signified us name of colour that is called Denotation of word.
but the word 'red'  is also signified us so many other different things in mind, like Red is signified danger for someone and
it is also signified  love and joy  for other ones
red is also signified to stop for some peoples.
These are the other meanings of  same word red that is called
connotations which is also known as Second order of signification.  This concept firstly given by  Roland Barthes, a French literary theorist, linguist who extend  the concept of Semiotics, which is the study of sign and symbol. He explored the way in which texts make meaning.
He considered that a single word have much more signified meaning. He analysed the denotative and connotative level of signs in a text.
The  Denotation can be described as the exact, literal meaning of a word.
It is the first order of signification. Whereas Connotation is
unspoken, hidden meaning. It is the second order of signification that uses the denotative signifier as its sign and attaches an additional signified. It is the
ideas, feeling associated with a word.

lets take another example: like:
He is Childish.  So here, denotation is like a child and connotation is
immature, inexperienced, babyish. Another one example as : This is
cheap, so denotation is low cost and connotation is poor quality, rough,
grainy, harsh

Take another example of word Rose is sign of Love that is first order of
signification, now the Rose is given on the valentine day as
declaration of affection, devotion and romance
, which is the second order of signification.

So today we are discussing same word have so different many meanings.
That is second order of signification given by Roland Barthes.
So now you think how same word signified so many different meanings. So it is better to think about denotation and connotation of words.
When you are making presentation and writings. It helps you to develop your own vocabulary as well.
This is all about for today.
We will back again with another concept on the Show Study on Air.
Till then, keep listening Bagla Radio.
